The Tripartite Commission, composed of senior military and diplomatic representatives from Afghanistan, Pakistan and Coalition Forces in Afghanistan, held its fourteenth meeting in Kabul, Afghanistan on December 15th. Delegates included General Ahsan Saleem Hyat, Vice Chief of the Army Staff of Pakistan, General Bismullah Khan, Chief of Staff of the Afghan National Army and Lieutenant General Karl W. Eikenberry, Commander, Combined Forces Command – Afghanistan. This Tripartite meeting marked the first official visit of General Hyat to Kabul.

Ottawa -- In remarks at a policy event on Wednesday, His Excellency Omar Samad, Ambassador of Afghanistan in Canada, called on Canada, the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) and many others who have contributed to Afghanistan’s reconstruction efforts to continue to be involved in the rebuilding of his country.

H.E. Hamid Karzai, President of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, left for Saudi Arabia this morning to attend the “Third Extraordinary Session of the Islamic Summit” which will be held on 7 to 8 December 2005 in Jeddah.

During this session, the President will address the challenges confronting the Islamic countries, the need for greater cooperation between all Islamic countries and the need for more education for Muslims around the world.

The President appreciated the initiative by King Abdullah to call for the convening of this Extraordinary Islamic Summit Conference under the umbrella of the Organization of the Islamic Conference.

During this visit, the President will meet with King Abdullah and other Muslim leaders from around the world. The President will also visit the shrine of Prophet Muhammad in Medina.

The President is accompanied on this trip by H.E. Dr Abdullah Abdullah, Minister of Foreign Affairs, H.E. Zalmai Rasol, National Security Advisor, H.E. Dr. Rangin Dadfar Spanta, Senior Advisor to the President on International Affairs and H.E. Jawed Ludin, Chief of Staff to the President.

The respected delegations of eleven regional countries meeting together in Kabul, Islamic Rebuplic of Afghanistan, on 4-5 December 2005, for the purpose of promoting regional economic cooperation among themselves:

Expressing their satisfaction that Afghanistan has made substantial progress in its reconstruction and has embarked on a path of improved security and economic develpment.

The Islamic Republic of Afghanistan will hold its First major Conference on Regional Economic Cooperation on Sunday, 4 th of December for two days at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan.

The Regional Economic Cooperation conference will be jointly chaired by the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan and the United Kingdom as the current President of the G8.

The participants include the six neighboring countries of Afghanistan plus India, Turkey, United Arab Emirates, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan. The participant countries will be represented at ministerial and senior official level.

The conference offers an exceptional opportunity for the region to enhance security and promote economic development. The conference will also focus on economic cooperation in areas of concern to the countries of the region which includes electricity and energy generation, transport, transit trade promotion and opportunities, border management, investment and improvement of the business climate.
