The exhibition highlights the link between Afghan women's participation in media and politics and the reconstruction of their country. Voices on the Rise: Afghan Women Making the News offers a glimpse into the lives of Afghan women journalists, producers, media managers, writers, photographers, filmmakers, human rights activists and parliamentarians. Their lives are challenging, fascinating and often harrowing as they juggle newfound freedoms with traditional responsibilities amid the constraints and ravages of life in country that underwent many years of conflict and destruction. The exhibition features the work of Afghan, Canadian and international photographers.
It was officially opened by Omar Samad, Afghanistan’s Ambassador to Canada, with remarks by co-curators Khorshied Samad and Jane McElhone, and Vice Chancellor at l'Universite de Montreal, Martha Crago. Also, in attendance were members of the diplomatic corps, representatives from NGOs and women’s rights groups and Afghan Canadians.
The exhibit will be open for public viewing at l'Université de Montréal from March 8th – March 20, 2007, it will then move to McGill University from March 21st – April 3rd, 2007.
