NEW YORK, Dec 31(Pajhwok Afghan News): In an interview to Pajhwok Afghan News, the Afghan Ambassador to Canada, Omar Samad, said Afghanistan would like to have a long-term commitment from Canada. As Canada decides on the future of its mission in Afghanistan, the year 2008 is to be an important year for Afghan-Canada relationship.

Toronto - The Canadian Afghan Council (CAC) sponsored a cultural event commemorating the 800th. anniversary of the birth of world-renouned poet and philosopher Mowlana Jalaludin Balkhi-Rumi on December 7, 2007 in Toronto.

Co-sponsored by federal conservative party candidate Mr. Chuck Konkel, and attended by a large number of Afghan Canadians and local politicians, several speakers lauded the spiritual richness and globally-inspiring message of Mowlana Balkhi-Rumi (1207-1273). [MORE]

| OTTAWA — The Honourable Beverley J. Oda, Minister of International Cooperation, accompanied by Afghanistan Ambassador Omar Samad, and Mr. John Flanagan, Acting Director, United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS), today announcedd today that that the Government of Canada is continuing its role as a lead supporter of mine action in Afghanistan by contributing $80 million over four years to help the country address the issues of mines. |
