Ottawa - Afghanistan’s Ambassador to Canada, Omar Samad, joined more than 25 Afghanistan experts in Waterloo, Ontario, December 17-19, for a workshop entitled "Afghanistan: Transition Under Threat" to discuss the progress of security and reconstruction efforts in Afghanistan.

| Ottawa- 11 year-old pianist Jan Lisiecki, 12 year-old violinist Anna Filochowska and 15 year-old violinist Piotr Filochowski accompanied by pianist Glen Montgomery performed to a packed audience at the auditorium of the National Gallery of Canada at an event entitled “Polich children extending a wish for peace to Afghan children”. |
The event sponsored by the Embassy of the Republic of Poland and the National Gallery was attended by House Speaker Hon. Peter Milliken, Foreign Affairs Assistant Deputy Minister, James Fox, and a number of Ambassadors, diplomats and music lovers.

I have met with academics, government officials, students, business leaders and other Canadians, to explain the difference Canada is making, specifically to my Ministry, through which most Canadian development assistance is directed.

The Fall Seminar featured a wide variety of informed speakers from the Government of Canada, academia, independent defence, and security analysts. Canada’s strategic interests in the region are examined from a current operational perspective layered with additional commentary from those who study the region, to those who have lived and worked there. |

Edmonton - Hundreds of soldiers who recently returned from Afghanistan were honoured with medals at a welcome home ceremony in Edmonton.
About 300 soldiers who arrived home from nine-month long tours received the medals and listened to a concert Sunday at Rexall Place. |

Ottawa – His Excellency Ehsan Zia, Afghanistan’s Minister of Rural Rehabilitation and Development, is on a week-long working visit to Canada, which will take him to Ottawa, Quebec City, Calgary and Vancouver.
On Thursday, Minister Zia, accompanied by Afghan Ambassador to Canada, Omar Samad, spoke at an academic roundtable at Carleton University. He then met with CIDA officials at the Ministry of International Cooperation in Hull.
