HEADLINE: A TIMELY EXHIBIT; HISTORY OF SALLY HORSE OPEN
May 08, 2005
BYLINE: BY MICHAEL BROWN, SPECIAL TO THE EDMONTON SUN

It's no coincidence the opening of the Provincial Museum of Alberta's newest exhibit took place on the weekend celebrating the 60th anniversary of VE-Day. After all, there may never have been a VE-Day if it were not for the bravery of outfits like the South Alberta Light Horse.

Hoof Prints to Tank Tracks - 100 Years of the South Alberta Light Horse (SAHL) is the museum's newest exhibit. It celebrates the storied history of the "Sally Horse," Alberta's armoured reconnaissance regiment.

"It shows our heritage," Maj.-Gen. Andrew Leslie, commander and chief in charge of Canadian troops in Afghanistan, said at the exhibit opening yesterday.

"Where you've been shows, arguably, where you're going to go. Alberta has always cared deeply for the military and there has always been a lot of public support - this is really unique in Canada."

Yesterday's ceremony included an inspection by Omar Samad, Afghanistan's ambassador to Canada. "It's befitting that this event marks the 60th anniversary of VE-Day, as we remember and celebrate those men and women who have served in the past and address those who will serve in the future," said Samad. "Afghanistan is grateful for essential pledges delivered by the Canadian military and other government departments."

A VE-Day ceremony starts at 10 a.m. today at City Hall.

HEADLINE: TOP AFGHAN TO SALUTE TROOPS – Edmonton Journal May 7, 2005
May 07, 2005

Afghanistan's ambassador to Canada will talk to Edmontonians today, marking the South Alberta Light Horse Regiment's centenary.

"Aside from reviewing the parade, I will speak to the people about the great achievements Canada has made in Afghanistan as a peacekeeping force," said Ambassador Omar Samad from Ottawa.

"I have been to Camp Julien (in Afghanistan) twice to visit the men and women there, and on behalf of the Afghan people and government, I thank them for helping us bring peace and stability to the country," Samad said. "The job is not done yet, and will require international peacekeeping for some time to come." About 900 Canadian troops are stationed in Afghanistan.

The South Alberta Light Horse Regiment is one of the oldest in the country. Today also marks the official opening of the provincial museum's Hoof Prints to Tank Tracks exhibition.

The formal opening ceremony of the centenary starts at 1 p.m. at the provincial museum grounds. A parade and formal inspection of the troops will also be part of the celebration, as well as displays of vehicles used by the regiment.
