We cant give up on Afghanistan, said Ambassador Samad. With the help of donor countries and particularly Canada, which has tremendous expertise, this participation must continue. Ambassador Samads plea echoed earlier remarks made by His Excellency Mahmoud Saikal, Deputy Foreign Minister for Economic Affairs, Government of Afghanistan, who urged donor nations to continue their support for Afghanistan as it moves ahead with a new post-Bonn framework for economic development. Reconstruction, Development and Peace Building in Afghanistan: Laying the Foundations for a Sustainable Peace, a policy event held Wednesday at the Canadian War Museum, brought together senior members of the governments of Canada and Afghanistan as well as development professionals from the public and non-governmental sectors to discuss the challenges ahead in Afghanistan, from governance to the eradication of poppy cultivation. In summarizing the deliberations, Khalil Z. Shariff, CEO of Aga Khan Foundation Canada (AKFC), emphasized the importance of long-term collaboration between governments, the private sector and non-governmental organizations in the development process. All must collaborate to strengthen Afghanistan, he said. Government is part of the process, but a strong society needs strong non-governmental institutions as well. The discussions were followed by the premiere of Giving Peace a Chance, a documentary on the AKDNs work in Afghanistan, written and directed by Richard Phinney. The Aga Khan Development Network is a group of eight non-denominational development agencies engaged in a range of economic, social and cultural programs in support of Afghanistans redevelopment, in the fields of health, education, microfinance, rural development, infrastructure as well as the restoration and preservation of important heritage sites. Aga Khan Foundation Canada is a non-profit development agency established in Canada in 1980. As a member agency of the worldwide Aga Khan Development Network, AKFC supports social development programs designed to benefit the poor in Africa, Asia and the Middle East. AKFC works in partnership with the Canadian government through the Canadian International Development Agency.
