No woman contender for Uruzgan council

KANDAHAR CITY, May 30 (Pajhwok Afghan News): The Joint Electoral Management Body (JEMB) Monday announced no female candidate had registered for Uruzgan council.

Addressing a press conference, regional chief of JEMB in southern Kandahar province Endy MA Campbell said despite all-out efforts, no woman candidate had come forward for the provincial council from Uruzgan.

He added a slot had been reserved for women in the Uruzgan provincial council, but no female candidate registered from that province.

Answering a question, he recalled a campaign had been run on television, radio and in newspapers to encourage women to join the race.

According to JEMB's foreign relations incharge Trens Wiet, a total of 273 people including 245 male and 28 female candidates registered for national assembly seats from the southern zone.

They include 16 men and four women from Nemroz, 81 men and seven women from Helmand, 103 men and 10 women from Kandahar, 27 men and 4 women from Zabul and 18 men and three women from Uruzgan province.

Registering for provincial councils are 33 men and three women from Nimroz; 107 men, seven women and three nomad men from Helmand; 115 men and seven women including four nomad men and one nomad woman from Kandahar; 29 men, two women and one nomad man from Zabul; and 33 men from Uruzgan.

He said people of the area were free to lodge complaints against candidates and, if found guilty of anomalies, their registration would be scrapped.
