U.S. army charges 3 more soldiers with Afghan prisoner abuse

FORT BLISS, Texas - Three more U.S. soldiers have been accused of assaulting prisoners in 2002 at an Afghan detention facility where two inmates died, army officials said Monday.

The soldiers have been charged with assault, maltreatment and making a false statement as part of an investigation into the deaths of the two Afghan prisoners at the Bagram Control Point, the officials said in a statement. The soldiers were identified as Sgt. Selena Salcedo and Sgt. Joshua Claus, of Fort Bragg, N.C.; and Sgt. Anthony Morden, of the army Reserve's 377th Military Police Company in Cincinnati.

Two other members of the 377th, Pte. 1st Class Willie Brand and Specialist Brian Cammack, already face charges related to the deaths.

In March, the New York-based Human Rights Watch said it had obtained unreleased army reports that showed the two Afghan detainees died in December 2002 - a week apart.

The army documents detail military investigations of the deaths of a man named Mullah Habibullah, about 30, and another identified only as Dilawar, a 22-year-old taxi driver, according to Human Rights Watch.

The two men were chained to the ceiling in standing positions, according to the army reports. Dilawar was maimed over a five-day period, dying with his leg muscle tissue destroyed from blows to his knees and lower body, the reports said. Habibullah died of a pulmonary embolism apparently caused by blood clots formed in his legs from the beatings, according to a 2004 military report.
