KABUL, May 17, (Pajhwok Afghan News) -- Laboratories to test the quality of imported food will be set up at all strategic ports and cities in Afghanistan, with €1Million donated by the German government, officials said Tuesday.
The agreement was signed on May 16 between the UN director of food and agriculture and Obaidullah Rameen the minister of agriculture and livestock in the capital Kabul.
Abdul Latif Rasuli, the director of the press office a the agriculture and livestock ministry told Pajhwok Afghan News that animals would also be checked and inspected for diseases, and quarantined and controlled.
The minister of agriculture and livestock speaking to journalists said the program with such labs hopes to improve quality of food consumed by Afghan people and improve their health.
He said that the creation of these labs will improve the food and bring it up to international standards. Afghanistan had such labs before the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, and the labs were destroyed during decades of civil war.
