KABUL, May 15, (Pajhwok Afghan News) -- President Hamid Karzai will be talking to US authorities during his visit to the United States at the end May, about the release of Afghan prisoners held at the US detention centers within Afghanistan and Guantanmo Bay camp in Cuba, the President's spokesman Jawed Ludin said today.
On his return from the EU conference in Brussels, President Karzai speaking to journalists’ spoke of the plight of the Afghan prisoners currently held at US military bases and jails in Guantanamo Bay of Cuba and Bagram and Kandahar in Afghanistan.
Speaking to Pajhwok Afghan News Ludin said the release of Afghan prisoners held under US custody was foremost on their agenda of talks to be had with the US government.
The United States is holding more than 500 Afghan prisoners at Guantanamo Bay, many of them suspected al-Qaeda and members of the Taliban captured in Pakistan and Afghanistan following September 11 attacks on the US that led to a subsequent US-led invasion in Afghanistan. This will be the first time Afghanistan is talking to US about hand over of the Afghan prisoners, Ludin said.
