OTTAWA, July 14, 2008— Today, the Government of Canada announced that it is seeking bids from Canadian-based companies to lead on repairs to the Dahla Dam in Kandahar province – one of Canada’s signature projects in Afghanistan. Rehabilitation of the dam supports one of Canada’s key priorities in the country, which is to build capacity to provide basic services – in this case, water – to the Afghan people.[MORE]

The Afghan Ambassador speaks at the Growing Inclusive Markets Forum held in Halifax, NS, at Dalhousie University, which drew more than 200 delegates from over 40 countries to focus on the role private sector partnerships, entrepreneurship and grass-roots development in alleviating world poverty. Former Canadian Prime Minister, Hon. Paul Martin, also spoke at this forum.

Amb. Samad was introduced by Mark Parent, Nova Scotia Minister of Environment and Labor. Following the keynote speech, Hon. Kevin Sorenson, MP and chair of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, expressed his appreciation and outlined Canada’s role in promoting private sector partnerships as part of global development. Mrs. Maryam Sidiqi, Director of the Afghan Women Business Council based in Kabul also attended this forum.

I may be wrong, but I think that over the past 105 years of this club’s history, I am the second Samad to be speaking from the prestigious Canadian Club podium… the first, my wife Khorshied, sitting a few feet away enjoying her desert, spoke to the women’s club last year.
