Ottawa - The Embassy of Afghanistan in Canada in collaboration with BloWup Photogalerie, commemorated international Women’s Day on Tuesday, March 8th, in Montréal.
This event featured Canadian photographer Lana Slezic and an exhibition of her photos on life and women in Afghanistan. Ms. Slezic recently returned from a year-long assignment in Afghanistan.
The exhibit entitled “NEVER CONQUERED, the enduring spirit of women in Afghanistan” illustrates the effects of war on women and the power of the human spirit to overcome incredible obstacles.
At the event, The Embassy honored the contributions of two women with achievements in Afghanistan, The Hon. Flora MacDonald, former Foreign Minister of Canada, and Ms. Adeena Niazi, the Executive Director of Toronto-based Afghan Women’s Organization. Both women made statements about their activities and shed light on their projects.
Ambassador Omar Samad and Mrs. Khorshied Samad spoke on the achievements of Afghan women, and discussed the ongoing challenges women face as they struggle for change and empowerment in Afghanistan. The Ambassador also read an official statement by H.E. President Hamid Karzai, released in Kabul honoring that day.
The Afghan envoy also expressed his hope that following the recent appointment of the country’s first female Governor, Kabul would soon appoint the first female Ambassador.
He also thanked Canada for its assistances to Afghanistan and, in the case of the event itself, expressed appreciation for the Department of Foreign Affairs’ decision to cover the cost of the airfare to Afghanistan for Lana Slezic.
Mr. Arif Lalani, Director of the South Asia Division at the Department of Foreign Affairs, spoke on the significance of this day, the Canadian contributions in various fields to Afghanistan and read out a statement on behalf of the Department on the occasion of International Women’s Day.
More than 200 Afghan and Canadian invitees, including staff of the Afghan Consulate General in Toronto, members of the Diplomatic Corp and the media attended this function. Afghan food, donated by the Khyber Pass restaurant, and music was also featured. A silent auction offered signed prints by the photographer. March 9, 2005 |
