The Ambassador attends a luncheon on the occasion of the Eid el Fitr hosted by the Honourable Pierre S. Pettigrew, Minister of Foreign Affairs, in Ottawa. Ambassadors from Islamic countries and other dignitaries also attend.

Upon the invitation of the Governor General of Canada, The Right Honourable Adrienne Clarkson, the Ambassador and Mrs. Samad attend the presentation of Meritorious Service Decorations and luncheon at Rideau Hall. Among the 37 medal recipients, the following Canadian military officers were honored for exceptional performance during their tour of duty in Afghanistan:

Colonel Peter John Devlin, O.M.M., M.S.C., C.D. (Brigadier-General and Commander), Chief Warrant Officer Wayne Arnold Ford, M.M.M., M.S.C., C.D. (Multi-National Brigade Sergeant-Major), Major-General Andrew Brooke Leslie, O.M.M., M.S.C., M.S.M., C.D. (Commander task force, and Deputy commander of NATO’s International Security Assistance Force), Chief Warrant Officer Daniel Rodney Bradley, M.S.N., C.D. (Multi-National Brigade), Lieutenant-Colonel Donald James Denne, M.S.M., C.D. (Canadian Battalion Group/International Security Assistance Force/Multi-National Brigade, task force), Colonel Joseph Armand Marc Pouliot, M.S.M., C.D. (International Security Assistance Force), Master-Corporal James Robert Sharp, M.S.M., C.D. (Deployment of a team to Operation Athena), Lieutenant-Colonel Stuart James Sharpe, M.S.M., C.D. (International Security Assistance Force), Lieutenant-Colonel Christopher Calvin Thurrott, M.S.M., C.D. (Task Force Kabul National Support Element on Operation Athena).

U.S. Army’s Brig-General Francis J. Wiercinski, MSM, was also honored with the Meritorious Service Medal for his part in Operations APOLLO/ENDURING FREEDOM.

A team from the Afghan Embassy visits the Canadian Forces Language School at St. Jean near Montreal and meets with staff and students, including a group of seven military officers from Afghanistan. The Afghan Ambassador meets with the detachment commander, Major Robert Tremblay and professors. He also addresses a group of military students from various countries and sheds light on events in Afghanistan.

The Ambassador attends National Remembrance Day ceremony along with other members of the diplomatic corps, and lays a wreath at the National War Memorial in Ottawa. The Governor General of Canada, the Prime Minister and other dignitaries attend the yearly event.

Upon the invitation of the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada, and its Chairman, Dr. Thomas Axworthy, the Ambassador of Afghanistan takes part in a closed-door consultation gathering on “Strategic Policy Options for Canada in Afghanistan”, makes the opening remarks and takes questions from the participants representing a cross-segment of Government departments, NGOs and think-tanks dealing with Afghanistan

Ambassador Samad speaks to students and faculty at the University of Ottawa. Presenting a historical context of the Afghan issues, he talks about the recent elections, the government’s priorities, Canada-Afghanistan relations and the role of the Diaspora and young Afghans in the rebuilding process.

The Afghan Ambassador, joined by Mr. Wais Wali, Afghan Vice Consul in Toronto, attends the Appreciation Dinner sponsored by the Health Partners International of Canada in Mississauga, Toronto. The Ambassador addresses the 200 representatives of Canada’s pharmaceutical industry and thanks them for their recent donations of medicine and medical equipment worth over $2 million (CAN) to Afghanistan as a result of HPIC’s efforts. The aid was transported last month with the help of CIDA for delivery to the Afghan Ministry of Public Health.

The Ambassador and Mrs. Samad joined by Mr. Mirwais Salehi, Afghan Consul in Ottawa, meet with more than 40 members of the Afghan community in Montreal, Quebec. During the two hour-long exchange, Amb. Samad provides an extensive overview of events in Afghanistan, and answers the community representatives’ questions.
